Malaysia - George Town

We arrived in George Town, Malaysia, after a disjointed but rather speedy bus journey across the border from Thailand. Our driver was clearly a man on a mission as we rarely seemed to drop below 120kph - regardless of whether we were on a motorway, passing through a town, navigating a small dirt track or crushing small animals beneath our worn dusty wheels.

George Town is a nice enough place, not a fantastic place, but not a bad one to hang around, if only for the sake of your stomach. You”ve got a good mix of Chinese, Indian and Malaysian people, so the food available around town is pretty diverse and, of course, dirt cheap. Most of the best food is available from the street stalls scattered around town but, because we like to act sophisticated once and a while, we ventured into a proper restaurant with some friends for a curry. And how much does a meal (consisting of rice, two curries, some popadoms, vegetables and various sauces) cost in a Malaysian Indian restaurant? 3.50 Ringgits - That’’s less then a dollar. We ate like kings!

Other than eating, we did briefly manage to lift our large bellies out of bed to explore the town and take in some of that over-hyped stuff known as culture… both types actually; a yogurt to calm the effects of the previous night’’s curry and a temple for the ”look I was here” pictures.

We”re heading to the Camaron Highlands tomorrow so stay tuned kids…
